Club
members and private owners go to fly in spectacular scenery on the
Memorial Day weekend. The weather this time of year can supports thermal
and wave soaring. Many of the pilots will fly from
Cal City to Lone
Pine airport with friends and families towing the trailers on the 100
mile drive north. The Caracole Soaring’s tow plane picks up the air tow
able land outs on its trip north to the Lone Pine airport on the Friday
afternoon pier to the holiday.
Flying
next to Mount Whitney
the tallest mountain in
North America 48 states is a sight that the CA and NV soaring pilots are blessed
with. Thermals can go to 17, 0000 this time of year. Many pilots have
flow 700k flights during the safari. Soaring is good till sunset on most
of the days.
As the
soaring pilots tie-down the sailplanes for the night the family and
friends head to the towns many great restaurants for talks of the days
soaring.
But
there is more than just soaring. Many of the family and friends
accompanying the soaring group with spend the day hiking in the
mountains many trials. Near by fishing ponds and streams are full of
local rainbow trout. In all, it’s an event that should not be missed. |
