Southern California Douglas Soaring Association is a club dedicated to
the sport of soaring. The club structure gives licensed and student
pilots access to gliders and flight training at reasonable cost. Club
members do not pay any aircraft rental fees: the major financial
advantage of belonging to a flying club. Aircraft maintenance,
insurance, and other operational costs are covered by
initiation
fees and monthly dues.
Our membership includes soaring enthusiasts of all ages, occupations,
and flying experience. The club limits the number of active members to
forty, insuring a low pilot to aircraft ratio. We have
four sailplanes available for members to fly and a few instructor
pilots.
Our gliders are based at the California City Airport (near Mojave,
California) about a two hour drive north of Los Angeles. The location,
the high desert adjacent to the Sierra Nevada mountains, provides almost
year round soaring conditions.
The SCDSA was formed from the merger of three long-time Southern
California Soaring Club: The Douglas Soaring Club, founded in 1952 by
employees of the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Southern California
Soaring Association, founded in 1935, and the Bernoulli Soaring
Association. We are a non-profit organization and a member of the
Soaring Society of America.
