 The HMS Queen Elizebeth, sister ship of the Queen Mary now ported in Long Beach, California, appears faintly in the far background of this picture. She was being refitted as a floating university, intended to travel the world's oceans with her student passenger cargo. Shortly after this picture was taken, a welder's spark started a fire that burned out of control for weeks. By the time of Midway's next visit, the Queen had sunk in Hong Kong harbor. | |
